Direct thermal vs thermal transfer labels

Direct thermal labels have a heat-sensitive coating: the printhead darkens the face stock and no ribbon is involved. They are the default for carrier shipping labels, pick tickets, receipts, and any barcode that is scanned within days or weeks. The trade-off is life — heat, sunlight, and abrasion fade the image over time.

Thermal transfer labels take their image from a wax, wax/resin, or resin ribbon melted onto the face stock. The print survives storage, handling, and — with resin on synthetics — chemicals and outdoor exposure. Choose thermal transfer for product labels, asset tags, shelf labels, and compliance marks, then pair the roll with a matching ribbon from the thermal ribbons page.

Sizes, cores, and roll diameters

Start with width × length. 4 × 6" is the shipping standard; 4 × 2", 4 × 3", 3 × 2", 2 × 1", and 2 × 2" cover cartons, bins, and barcode identification; smaller sizes handle jewelry, vials, and electronics where offered. Then match the core and outer diameter to the printer class. Desktop printers — Zebra ZD-series and comparable 4" units — take 1" core rolls up to about 5" OD. Industrial printers such as the Zebra ZT-series take 3" core rolls up to 8" OD, which means fewer roll changes on long runs. Both figures are listed on every SKU along with labels per roll and rolls per case.

Face stocks, adhesives, and finishes

Most rolls here are paper face stock with a permanent adhesive — the right answer for cartons and shipping. Tinted thermal transfer stock adds color-coding without printing in color, and removable-adhesive rolls come off clean for returnable totes, retail shelf edges, and temporary marking.

Perforations between labels, topcoats for smudge resistance, and synthetic face stocks appear on the SKU where they apply. If a stock die does not cover the job, custom printed labels are quoted to your size, material, and finish.

The standard 4 × 6" industrial roll holds 900 to 1,000 labels per roll, packed 4 rolls per case (3,600 to 4,000 labels/case), and 48 to 60 cases per pallet. • Fanfold Stacks: Folded in continuous zigzag stacks with perforations between labels, fanfold media feeds through the rear slot of desktop or industrial printers without core constraints, packing 2,000 to 4,000 labels per carton.

All cases are packaged with protective moisture-barrier poly wraps to preserve thermal face sensitivity and adhesive integrity in non-climate-controlled warehouse environments.

Rolls ship from the fulfillment location that stocks them, and ship dates are confirmed per shipment after the order is placed rather than promised up front. Labels, thermal ribbons, and printers go in the same cart, so one order covers the whole print station.
