Choosing an ink grade
Wax ribbons are the everyday choice: they print crisp barcodes on uncoated and matte-coated paper labels and cost the least per roll. Use them for shipping, carton, shelf, and warehouse labels that are handled but not scrubbed.
Wax/resin ribbons add resin to the formulation so the image resists smudging and moderate abrasion on semi-gloss paper, polypropylene, and other coated face stocks — the usual answer for product and inventory labels. Resin ribbons bond to synthetics such as polyester, polyimide, and vinyl and hold up to chemicals, heat, and outdoor exposure, which makes them the pick for asset tags, drum labels, and compliance marks. Specialty grades cover near-edge printers and harsh-environment jobs.
Width, length, and core
Ribbon width should be at least as wide as the label material — a ribbon narrower than the web lets the printhead touch bare face stock and wear early. Common widths track common webs: about 2.3" for 2" labels, 4.3" for 4" labels, and 6.5" for 6" industrial webs, with narrower rolls for small barcode labels.
Desktop printers take shorter ribbons on a smaller core; industrial printers take long rolls on a 1" core so operators change ribbon far less often. Both figures are listed on every SKU, and matching a label roll and ribbon of similar length keeps changeovers in sync.
Matching ribbon to label face stock
Ribbon and label are a system. Paper labels pair with wax or wax/resin; polypropylene and polyester need wax/resin or resin; tinted and topcoated stocks usually want wax/resin. When a job needs a specific durability spec — chemical wipe, freezer, UV — start from the resin ribbons page and confirm the face stock on the label SKU.
Direct thermal labels do not use a ribbon at all. If your label roll is listed as direct thermal, leave the ribbon out of the cart and see the direct thermal labels page instead.
How ribbon is sold wholesale
Ribbons are sold by the box, with rolls per box shown on each SKU. Public pages list ink grade, width, length, core, and coated side; approved wholesale accounts see box pricing and volume tiers, and can add ribbon to the same cart as labels and printers.

Do direct thermal labels need a ribbon?
No. Direct thermal roll labels print without a ribbon. Thermal transfer ribbons are only for thermal transfer roll stock.
Which ribbon grade do I need?
Wax for paper shipping and carton labels, wax/resin for coated paper and polypropylene product labels, resin for polyester and other synthetics in chemical, heat, or outdoor environments.
How wide should my ribbon be?
At least as wide as the label material, and a little wider is normal — an uncovered strip of face stock under the printhead causes premature wear.
What is coated-side-in vs coated-side-out?
The ink can face inward or outward on the roll. Most desktop printers accept only one orientation and many industrial printers accept either, so check the inking-side note on the SKU against your printer manual before ordering.
Which ribbons fit Zebra ZT and ZD printers?
Roll-fed Zebra printers take standard ribbons: long 1" core rolls for ZT industrial models and shorter small-core rolls for roll-fed ZD desktop models — filter by width and ink type on the ribbon catalog. Cartridge-only ZD models (ZD420c, ZD421c) use Zebra cartridges instead.
