Desktop vs industrial Zebra printers
ZD-class desktop printers such as the ZD421 and ZD621 print 4-inch webs from 1" core rolls up to about 5" in diameter, in direct thermal or thermal transfer versions. They suit shipping stations, retail back rooms, clinics, and any spot that prints hundreds of labels a day rather than thousands.
ZT-class industrial printers such as the ZT231, ZT411, and ZT421 have metal frames, take 3" core rolls up to 8" in diameter and long ribbons, and offer 203 or 300 dpi heads (600 dpi on the ZT411) on 4-inch webs (6-inch on the ZT421). They are built for continuous shifts on warehouse, manufacturing, and distribution lines.
Labels and ribbons that fit Zebra printers
Label width must sit within the printer's maximum media width — 4-inch ZD-series desktop models take stock up to 4.65" wide (2-inch models about 2.5"), 4-inch industrial models up to about 4.5", and 6-inch industrial models take wider webs — and the core and roll diameter must match the class. Direct thermal rolls are the common pick for shipping on desktop units; thermal transfer rolls plus a ribbon cover product, asset, and compliance labels.
Ribbon width should be at least as wide as the label, and industrial ribbons run long on a 1" core so operators change them less often. Start from the 4 × 6" labels page for shipping stations and the thermal ribbons page for wax, wax/resin, and resin grades.
