Zebra ZD421 media specifications

The Zebra ZD421 desktop printer accepts media up to 4.27" (108 mm) wide on a standard 1" core with a maximum roll outer diameter of 5.0" (127 mm). It handles die-cut labels, continuous stock, black mark sensing, and notch or gap media.

Standard industrial 3" core rolls (8" OD) will not fit inside the ZD421 clamshell media bay without an external roll mount. For clean, self-contained desktop stations, choose 1" core rolls packed specifically for desktop units (typically 250 to 450 labels per roll for 4 × 6" sizes).

Direct thermal vs. thermal transfer on the ZD421

Ensure your label selection matches your specific ZD421 printer configuration: the direct thermal ZD421 (ZD421d) prints without ribbon directly onto heat-sensitive media, ideal for shipping and pick tickets.

The thermal transfer ZD421 (ZD421t) and ribbon-cartridge ZD421 (ZD421c) accept thermal ribbons to produce scratch-, chemical-, and heat-resistant labels on paper or synthetic stock.

What roll core size does the Zebra ZD421 take?

The Zebra ZD421 uses a standard 1" core (0.5" is also supported via adapter) with a maximum roll outer diameter of 5.0". Industrial 3" core rolls will not fit inside the printer.

Does the Zebra ZD421 require a ribbon?

It depends on the sub-model: direct thermal models (ZD421d) print without ribbon. Thermal transfer models (ZD421t and ZD421c) require a matching thermal ribbon.

Can I print 4 × 6" shipping labels on a ZD421?
