Synthetic label materials compared: BOPP, Kimdura-spec polypro, polyester, and polyimide

When paper labels tear on forklift pallets, dissolve under chemical splashes, or char in electronics assembly, industrial buyers step up to synthetic film substrates. However, over-specifying polyester or polyimide when polypropylene (BOPP) will do can triple your media spend. Here is how to match synthetic film chemistry to your operating environment.

Polypropylene (BOPP) & 3.0 Mil Kimdura-Spec Polypro

Biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) and 3.0 mil matte polypropylene (comparable to Kimdura®) are the workhorse synthetic films for logistics, chemical drums, nursery tags, and moisture-heavy plant floors. They are 100% waterproof, resist tearing across die-cut notches, and withstand oils and mild solvents.

We stock both thermal transfer matte polypropylene rolls (paired with wax/resin or resin ribbons) and 3.2 mil direct thermal poly film that prints waterproof barcodes without a ribbon.

  • Service temperature up to ~175°F to 200°F
  • Waterproof, oil-resistant, and tear-resistant at an economical price point
  • Available in white matte (Kimdura-spec), gloss white, chrome metallic, and clear BOPP

Polyester (PET) & Cross-Laminated HDPE (Valeron / Tyvek)

When labels face prolonged outdoor UV exposure, harsh solvents (MEK, brake fluid, IPA), or UL 969 compliance plate requirements, 2.0 mil polyester (such as Fasson matte chrome or gloss white PET) provides superior dimensional stability and heat resistance up to 300°F (150°C).

For un-adhered hang tags, steel coil tags, and lumber yard manifests where mechanical puncture and tear strength are paramount, spunbonded DuPont™ Tyvek® and Valeron® cross-laminated HDPE films resist ripping even around staples and wire ties.

Polyimide (PI), ESD-Safe, and Flame-Retardant Films

At the top of the thermal hierarchy sits Polyonics polyimide (1 mil and 2 mil PI). Engineered for printed circuit board (PCB) surface-mount reflow and wave solder lines, polyimide survives short-term heat spikes up to 572°F (300°C) and aggressive flux wash cycles without shrinking or yellowing.

For static-sensitive semiconductor lines and EV battery packs, specialty ESD-safe static-dissipative topcoats and halogen-free UL94 VTM-0 flame-retardant films prevent triboelectric discharge and self-extinguish under electrical arcing.

✓Synthetic Substrate Selection Matrix

  • •Water, humidity, totes, or outdoor yard storage (<180°F)? Choose Polypropylene (BOPP / Kimdura-spec).
  • •Wire-tied hang tags, steel coils, or extreme tear resistance? Choose Valeron® or DuPont™ Tyvek®.
  • •Appliance rating plates, harsh solvents, or UL 969 durability (<300°F)? Choose 2 mil Polyester (PET) + Pure Resin Ribbon.
  • •PCB solder reflow ovens (up to 572°F)? Choose Polyonics Polyimide (PI) + Pure Resin Ribbon.
  • •Battery packs, switchgear, or static-sensitive electronics? Specify ESD-Safe or UL94 Flame-Retardant film.
